Sometimes the very best way to see how an artist thinks is by looking through their sketchbook. Filled with drawings never intended for public display, these sketches are the footnotes I will later use to create a finished piece of concept art. Below are just a few samples from countless sketchbooks I have filled over the years.

Although most sketches are done traditionally in a sketchbook I am increasingly finding it valuable to sketch in 3D as well. These rough models allow me to explore the construction of objects and create the early props and details that will later populate a concept model.

My very favorite form of drawing is sketching while traveling. There is nothing quite like being in a new part of the world and trying to capture your impressions and details of the surrounding landscape, archtecture, and food. I have self-published a collection of these drawings as a a small book which can be purchased through Amazon by clicking the image above.
